Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe
It can feel like today’s innovations in home cooking are all about speed and efficiency. An Instant Pot can cook up meals in a fraction of the time traditional methods would, and instead of waiting around for your oven to preheat, you can turn to an air fryer to crisp up food instantly. However, making food quickly isn’t the only way. Sometimes, the opposite approach is best. Slow cooking has been around for a while, and for good reason. When you prepare a meal in a Crock Pot or other slow cooker, it can indeed take many hours. However, with a little advance planning, slow cooking your food can be easy as pie. You don’t have to constantly tend to a bubbling pot for hours just set it and forget it, and after several hours of doing whatever you’d like to do, dinner will be ready before you know it.
In this case, dinner is a hearty split pea soup, courtesy of recipe developer Miriam Hahn. Enjoying a steaming bowl of split pea soup isn’t just comforting, it’s also good for you “Split peas are very high in protein, fiber, iron and folate. They are also an anti inflammatory food and they keep you full a long time,” Hahn explains. And, not only are peas good for you, but they happen to taste delightful in a soup!
Ingredients For Pea Soup
Hearty and wholesome, this soup is chock full of good for you ingredients. Herbs and spices give that extra umph and flavor. If you dont have a leftover ham bone you can use, ask the butcher for one at your local grocery store. You can also leave out the ham bone and just add ham. It wont be quite as flavorful but still amazing.
- Butter: For sautéing the vegetables.
- Onion: A classic ingredient for most soups.
- Carrots: Dice into bite sized pieces.
- Celery: Add incredible flavor to the stock.
- Garlic: Gives the split pea soup a nice flavor.
- Dried Split Peas: These can be found with other dried beans at your local store.

Simmer Split Pea Soup
Bring the soup to a boil, reduce heat, and let gently simmer with the lid slightly ajar for about 60 minutes. At this point, the peas should be creamy and soft. If you want the peas softer to the point where they break down, continue cooking another 15 minutes.
Also, if you want the soup a bit thinner, add another splash or broth or water.

Where Can I Find The Ingredients
The good news is that split peas, seasoning and bouillon powder/cubes used in this soup can be found in just about every major grocery store. Look in the dried bean aisle for the peas and the spice aisle for the seasoning and bouillon. Sometimes the bouillon is in the soup section.
A bulk food store should have a great selection as well especially if you have specific needs for your bouillon.

Your Soup Is Ready To Enjoy
After the appropriate amount of hours have passed and your split peas have gone from dried to soft, add in your parsley, lemon juice, and ham, if you’re using it. Once you do that, it’s soup time! You can serve this soup any way you’d like, of course, but Hahn says she enjoys pairing a bowl of her split pea soup with “a green salad or steamed broccoli.”
This makes enough to feed six people, so depending on how many people are coming to dinner, you may have soup to spare. “Leftovers will last up to 5 days in a sealed container,” Hahn says. You can also freeze your leftovers, which will make them last two months.

Let The Slow Cooking Begin
Give everything in your slow cooker a good stir, and then turn it on. If you’re cooking on high, it’ll take about four to five hours, and if you’re cooking on low, it’ll be between seven and nine hours. Then, the waiting game begins. “If you make split pea soup on the stove it takes a couple of hours and if you come and go a lot like I do, that doesn’t work too well,” Hahn says. “I love how you can leave the slow cooker unattended and it does magic all day. I love how it smells and there is something really satisfying about making dinner before work in the morning!”

Split Pea Soup With Ham
A simple recipe that delivers big flavor, this split pea soup with ham is hearty enough to serve as a meal.
Perfect for that first burst of cold weather and to enjoy throughout fall and winter, split pea soup is a classic American soup made from split peas peas that have been hulled, dried, and split and a pork-rich broth. The soup is traditionally made with a smoked ham bone, but these days its near impossible to find ham bones at the supermarket. This recipe, modestly adapted from Americas Test Kitchen, has a genius workaround: simmering a few slices of thick-cut bacon and a ham steak in the broth to make the soup smoky and extra meaty. This split pea soup is a simple recipe that delivers big flavor, and its hearty enough to serve as a meal. I top it with croutons made from a fresh baguette , but it would also pair nicely with homemade artisan bread or cornbread.
How To Make It
See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions, including the Crock Pot and Instant Pot cooking methods.
Add a meaty ham bone to a 4.5 quart Dutch oven or soup pot along with the rinsed split peas, onions, butter, olive oil, onion powder, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, and water.
Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover partially and simmer for 2.5 hours or until desired thickness is obtained. Add the potatoes and carrots about 40 minutes prior to serving.
Remove from heat once the potatoes and carrots are fork tender. Discard the bay leaves and thyme stems. Remove the ham bone and cut/shred 2 cups of ham from it and add it back to the soup. Serve!

How To Make Vegan Split Pea Soup Step By Step Photos

Start by dicing one yellow onion, three ribs of celery, and three carrots, and mincing two cloves of garlic. Add them to a large soup pot along with 2 Tbsp olive oil.
Sauté the vegetables over medium heat until the onions are soft.
Add one pound of split peas to the pot along with ¼ tsp dried thyme, ½ tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp dried parsley, ¼ tsp freshly cracked pepper, and six cups of water.
Stir everything to combine, place a lid on top, then turn the heat up to medium-high to bring the soup up to a boil.
Once boiling, turn the heat down to medium-low and let the soup simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes or until the peas have completely broken down and the soup has thickened.
Finish the soup by salting to taste. Start with ½ tsp salt and continue to taste and add more until the soup taste bright and vibrant. I added 1.5 tsp and then it was just right! You can garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, but its not needed for flavor.
Serve hot with crackers, croutons, or crusty bread for dipping!
