Why Must I Use Unsalted Butter Only To Turn Around And Add Worcestershire Sauce
I made Swedish meatballs using this very Swedish meatballs recipe about twenty years ago for the first time. You might say that I was not necessarily confident in the kitchen back then, and surprised myself a bit.
There is a rule of thumb I use for salting food. I cook with unsalted butter and generally unsalted stock. I add Worcestershire a teaspoon at a time to taste. Why?
Worcestershire isnt just salt, its UMAMI. It gets you to where you need to go with seasoning WAY FASTER and WAY TASTIER then salt.
Can I Make Swedish Meatballs In A Crock Pot
It was October and already frigid in New Jersey. I busted out my slow cooker once these little meatballs were prepared and used it to keep the sauce and meatballs hot.
And while Swedish meatballs in the crockpot were good, I still think I prefer to make them from scratch to avoid drying them out. Easy Swedish meatballs, with just the littlest bit of planning, are easier than one might think.

Keep things simple and just add a simple side salad. You could also try Roasted Green Beans or learn how to steam broccoli in the microwave for a super easy veggie side dish. Green peas are also tasty.
My kids will eat any green vegetable as long as I pour the sauce over it. They gobble it right up! Talk about a mom win.
I think mashed potatoes would also be delicious. You can spoon the sauce over the mashed potatoes. This is one of our favorite side dishes.

How To Make Swedish Meatballs With Frozen Meatballs
Frozen Meatballs – Yes you could of course make your own but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of this recipe being easy. I have to put a shoutout to the best frozen meatballs ever here and those are the Costco ones. They sell a giant bag of Italian style meatballs that are so delicious. The membership alone is worth it just for those meatballs. Or just pick up a bag from the grocery store. Any kind of frozen meatball works here Italian style, homestyle, etc.
Beef Broth – I have tested the recipe with full salt beef broth and it was too much salt when combined with the condensed soup and gravy packet. Use the 50% reduced sodium beef broth. But of course, as always, use regular beef broth if that’s what you prefer.
Cream of Mushroom Soup – I don’t even like mushrooms but I love this ingredient in these meatballs. The whole point of Swedish meatballs is that creamy gravy sauce and the cream of mushroom soup adds creaminess and rich flavor with the mushrooms.
Brown Gravy Packet – Adds tons of flavor with just one packet.
Water
Garlic Powder
Evaporated Milk – I wanted to add some type of creamy element. Sour cream is the usual ingredient in a Swedish meatballs recipe but I find that it makes the sauce chunky with bits of sour cream instead of smooth. The evaporated makes the sauce so smooth and creamy.

What Is A Good Side Dish To Eat With Swedish Meatballs
Swedish meatballs sauce with cream of mushroom soup or Swedish meatball sauce with sour cream is unnecessarily heavy in my opinion.
If you are serving with traditional egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or with my Crazy Good French Onion Noodle Casserole, dont weigh down these two-bite gems with anything dense.
Think of it this way the meatballs are the stars, the sauce is the supporting cast.

The Best Crock Pot Swedish Meatballs
After I shared the CROCK POT SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS recipe a couple of weeks ago, I got a bunch of emails from folks asking for more recipes like that one. It really is the simple things, isn’t it? Crock Pot Swedish Meatballs is now one one of the most popular recipes on The Country Cook. Also, if this recipe tempts your tastebuds, you’re definitely gonna want to make my CROCK POT SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS.
What Kind Of Frozen Meatballs Should You Use
Again, its very important to use unseasoned, original meatballs. Avoid using Italian-style meatballs if you can. Its not a total deal breaker, but this Swedish sauce will taste better on plain meatballs vs. seasoned ones and will be more authentic.
You can even use vegetarian meatballs or meatballs made with ground turkey if youre looking for a lighter option. I find that the medium to higher priced meatballs do have better flavor but in this case, the Swedish sauce will overpower the flavor of the meatballs themselves more so than meatballs with red sauce. So you dont have to worry too much about the taste of the meatballs other than checking the ingredient list and nutrition facts.

The directions are easy, and the ingredients you can purchase ahead of time and put in your pantry for a quick and easy meal when you have no idea what to make for dinner that night! I love those meals. So, much better than the drive-thru.

How To Make Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatball recipes are all over the internet. Most are very similar, all but for the spices that I incorporate directly into the meat mixture. Bold nutmeg and sweet-scented allspice balance everything in addition to salt and pepper.
AND, I make a point to dust the final product very lightly with a combination of the two just before serving. To me, the nutmeg and the allspice are what breathe life into these beautiful little meatballs with sauce.
And the Swedish meatball sauce or gravy? I know I will be asked if it can be made without heavy cream or with sour cream, or even cream of mushroom soup. The answer is probably, but not here.
