    Allergy Aware Red Bean Soup

Red bean soup is free of the top 8 allergens as written in this recipe. Most of the ingredients are simple and easy to substitute or find nut free. Its traditional to use rock sugar or brown slab sugar but difficult to verify allergen information. You can easily substitute with your favorite brand of brown sugar.

However, I felt uneasy about the adzuki bean options available at my local Asian supermarket. Some brands didnt have allergen advisories but those brands also have packages of raw peanuts, its reasonable to assume theres a chance of cross-contact. I didnt have a lot of time to check online or go to different stores, but I ended up buying a private label package of adzuki beans from a Japanese grocery and rinsed the beans in a colander.

You could use instant tapioca as a substitute for tapioca pearls because its easier to verify allergen information. Note that you must use the type of instant tapioca used for making pies and pudding from scratch. Do not use instant tapioca pudding mix, its safe to say that results will vary if you use instant tapioca pudding mix. Edwards & Son has an allergen free and organic tapioca pearl which I did not have time to order or source locally. I simply used small tapioca pearls from the Asian supermarket.

Traditionally Cajun dirty rice does contain some meat, usually chopped chicken livers or giblets. I have had a version in New Orleans that added some spicy Andouille sausage too.

The meat is left behind in this recipe to let the flavours of the spices and vegetables shine all on their own.

Canned beans, should be well rinsed before using in the recipe.

You could easily add chicken or sausage to the recipe if you wanted, even leftover chicken from a roast chicken dinner would be good. If using meat, you could easily use chicken stock as well if you prefer.

Smoked Paprika is one of my most used spices. I love it, so I generally add double whats written in the recipe.

With the addition of a few extra vegetables to the dirty rice inspiration, this thick hearty soup stands up all on its own. It would make a terrific lunch choice when serving a vegetarian meal to any crowd, regardless of whether theyre meat eaters or not.

How To Make Red Bean Soup

    what

Give yourself about 24 hours lead time to make the red bean soup, depending on how you like it. Some people prefer their soup to taste like a soup with soft beans. Some people might like it a little more like congee or split pea soup.

You will want to cook it at the lowest heat possible for a long time, which is easy to do if you have an electric stove. If you have a gas stove, you need to be sure that the temperature is at the lowest temperature possible but the flame wont go out. The recipe is written for cooking on a stove top.

If you want it to cook while youre at work or sleeping and cant supervise cooking the soup on a stove top, you can cook red bean soup in a thermal pot or a slow cooker so that you dont have to keep an eye on it. I ended up taking the red bean soup to a potluck so I made it in my thermal pot so that its easy to transport. Obviously it was perfect when I finished making it at home and took a photo, but it kept cooking in the residual heat in the car, during lunch, and became too goopy by the time we had dessert. Next time I would adjust the amount of water or cooking time if I need to transport it via a thermal pot.

Its A Brothy Red Bean Soup

Louisiana Style Red Beans and Rice Recipe | #SoulFoodSunday

This isnt a thick stew-like soup which is a bit of a departure from my usual bean soups, but it works here because were adding cooked rice to the beans just before serving.

The scoop of steamed rice will add body and heft to the spicy broth and the deep Louisiana Cajun flavors are irresistible.

    Helpful Tips And Tricks

Are you ready to try this traditional Louisiana favorite? I hope so, because I know you are going to love it! But before you go, let me share just a few helpful tips.

    • Make It Thinner: As the red beans cook, the liquid in the pot will thicken. You can thin it out with more broth if you would like it to be more of a soup adjusting the salt accordingly.
    • Make It Thicker: For thicker and creamier red beans and rice, try mashing or pureeing about a cup of the cooked beans, and stirring them back into the pot.
    • Vegetarian Option: If youd like to make a vegetarian version of this dish, thats fine, too! I recommend adding extra seasoning, oil, and vegetables of your choice, as well as a splash of soy sauce or coconut aminos, to boost the flavor.

Cooking Is Quick And Easy With The Instant Pot

A Good Appetite: Red Beans and Rice Soup

Ever since I got my Instant Pot, I feel so much more capable of putting healthy meals on the table. Instead of getting a Zatarains spice packet at the store , I turn to the Instant Pot instead. Because it cooks under pressure at a high heat, its capable of melding flavors together in an incredible way. Everything I cook in it tastes like it simmered all day on the stovetop!

For this Instant Pot Red Beans and Rice Stew, the onion, garlic, bell pepper, and celery intensify when theyre cooked under pressure. As they get super soft, they infuse the rest of the ingredients with their flavor and aroma. Its a perfect pairing with spicy cayenne pepper, liquid smoke, and paprika . And, since we cook the brown rice in the pot with the rest of the ingredients, it absorbs all of that flavor. The result is pretty phenomenal!

About the beans: using canned low-sodium kidney beans means that theyre already soft and ready to eat. You wont have to wait 30 to 45 minutes for the Instant Pot to cook dry beans from scratch. As a result, this dish only requires 15 minutes of cooking time! We love a quick-and-easy, one-pot meal like this because it means we can make it on a weeknight.

Do The Camellia Beans Take Less Time To Cook Than Other Kidney Beans

Possibly. They do seem a bit smaller than some other kidney beans, which is why I mention what to do if the beans arent done after pressure cooking. If youre using large kidney beans, I suggest adding 5 minutes to the pressure cooking time, just to be safe. So many factors can affect bean cooking that its hard to give a cooking time that works for everyone. But I can say that using Camellia red beans, I was able to get them soft in 25 minutes of pressure cooking with 30 minutes of natural pressure release.

How To Make Red Beans And Rice Soup:

  • Heres the Amylu Chicken Andouille Sausage that inspired me to come up with this recipe!
  • The sausage comes in packs of eight links, and theyre not too thick so I used all of one pack in the soup. If youre buying the regular grocery store pack with 4 links, you can certainly use less.
  • I taught school with a woman from Louisiana who taught me to love Tony Chacheres Creole Seasoning, but if you dont have this brand any Creole seasoning will work.
  • I was using the Ninja Cooker , so I sauteed the onions, garlic, and spices right in the slow cooker, but you can definitely do this in a pan.
  • I cut the sausage in half and then sliced it into half-moon pieces, but next time I might just go with round slices take your pick!
  • Put the onions, garlic, spices, cooked red beans, sliced sausage, chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, Green Tabasco Sauce , and bay leave into the slow cooker.
  • Cook on high for about 4 hours or on low for 7-8 hours.
  • While the soup cooks, cook enough rice to have 2 cups cooked rice and a little more for adding at the table. to cook the rice, but you can cook it on the stove too.) If youd like a lower-carb version of this tasty soup, just make it with cauliflower rice!
  • Add the cooked rice or cauliflower rice and cook about 20-30 minutes more on high, adding a tiny bit more stock or water if youd like a thinner soup.
  • Serve hot, with additional rice and Green Tabasco Sauce to add at the table.
