Best Overall Canned Soup

While it was easy to find consensus on the best soup brands on the market, personal tastes vary so much that we didnt get many repeat recommendations for a specific brands soup flavor. That said, two of the experts we spoke to recommended Progresso Chicken Noodle. Kysha Harris, food editor at the Spruce Eats, loves this traditional soup, saying, Its as close to the real thing as youre likely to find, making it perfect when youre feeling under the weather. Chef Carolyn Timbers prefers the light version. It has fewer calories per serving and less fat, too. It is rare to find good and healthy canned soups nowadays. This one tastes great and is perfect for punching up with toppings or mixing with Mexican dishes, she says.

It Could Help You To Lose Weight

As per author Ramin Zahed, tomatoes are hunger suppressants. They also contain adequate amounts of fibres, air and water which make it an ideal food supplement. The antioxidants present in tomatoes can reduce water retention and bloating that comes with it. Tomato soups are thus instrumental in fighting off leptin resistance. Leptins have a tendency to prevent human bodies from shedding weight. A small tomato will have just about 22 calories which is very low. Even if it is a large one it will have less than 35 calories in total.

Amys Mushroom Bisque Soup With Porcini Review

Amys Mushroom Bisque Soup with Porcini is a mild-tasting, partly organic mushroom soup, rather light in consistency, but in line with the bisque tradition, contains lots and lots of medium-sized mushroom pieces, and has a creamy texture. Really gives you something pleasant to chew on, as you get some in every bite. They do not sink to the bottom so fast, so constant stirring is not necessary. Amys organic soups are served in our kitchen at least several times per week, and this is perhaps our favorite mushroom soup in the pantry.

Guidelines For Sodium Consumption

Amy

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that we should not exceed 2,300 mg of dietary sodium each day.

Despite these recommendations, only 10% of Americans actually stay below this limit.

One study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the average daily sodium consumption in America is around 3,850 mg and this can have a lot of negative impacts on our physical health.

In particular, regularly exceeding the recommended amount of dietary sodium is closely linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease . On the other hand, decreasing sodium consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve kidney function.

How Can You Make Canned Soup Better

Canned soup is a great starting point for a mealâwith a little creativity and some spare ingredients, you can turn a basic soup into much more. Have some extra kale or spinach on hand in your fridge? Toss those greens into the pot and let them wilt down in just moments. If you have extra frozen veggies in your freezer , throw them into the pot, and let the simmering soup warm them through for a few minutes. This will not only add substance to your soup, but it will add tons of nutrients .

If you have any extra rotisserie chicken, cut or shred it into small pieces and add it to a vegetarian soup for a protein boost. If you have any extra plain white rice from your Chinese takeout meal a few days back, give it a new life by adding it to your soup! And donât forget about garnishes a simple topping or side can really elevate a canned soup. Easy sides like garlic bread, toasted baguette, a sprinkle of shaved Parmesan, and crushed tortilla chips can turn a light dish into a filling meal. Even a squeeze of citrus or sprinkle of fresh herbs can add a bright element to liven up the canned soup.

Choose Between Cans And Microwavable Cups

Store-bought low-sodium soups can come in aluminum cans or microwavable cups. Most canned soups have more than one serving and might be a good option if you want to share with someone else. However, cans are not microwavable, so youll have to pour the contents out before warming them up in the microwave.

On the other hand, microwavable cups are meant for a single serving only and are a convenient choice to pack for lunch at school or the office. They are super easy to prepare as well! Simply pop the cup in the microwave and wait for a bit.

Do Canned Soups Have A Ton Of Sodium

Canned soup has gotten a bad rap over the years, namely for its high sodium content. But there were reasons for all that salt initially, the first being preservation. Canned foods are better preserved in a salty or sweet medium. However, vacuum packing has eliminated the need for sodium as the sole mineral to inhibit bacterial growth. explains Stoler. The second reason is to please the typical Americans palate, which tends to prefer saltier foods.

But the most interesting tidbit of all? Despite Americans concerns over high-sodium soups, food companies had significant trouble getting low-sodium soups off the shelves. An industry secret is that most larger companies have reduced their sodium content over the years without notifying consumers, says Stoler. When canned soups were labeled as low or no sodium, they didnt sell well because consumers assumed the taste would be compromised.

Nowadays, there are tons of low-sodium soups on the market, many of them legitimately delicious. But if youre worried that a low-sodium soup will have less flavor, remember that you can always add your own ingredients to prepare it more to your liking. The truth is, if someone wants more salt, they can always add it. If a soup is too salty, add more water. Its really that simple, says Stoler.

Here are 18 healthy canned soups to look for the next time youre grocery shopping.

Cream Of Mushroom Soup

Cream of Mushroom Soup is an easy to prepare creamy soup loaded with lots of mushroom flavor. After tasting this luxuriously cream soup with plenty of sautéed mushrooms, you will never pick up the canned version again.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, I get the frequent question of what will my menu be for our family feast. I respond without hesitation. A traditional Thanksgiving menu of turkey with stuffing and gravy, stuffed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie with whipped cream will grace our family table this year just as it does every year. I do not dare alter the menu. A riot may ensure in our home. But I may sneak in a first course of my homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup to shake things up a little this year.

I love making a big batch of homemade soup. Not only are most soup recipes easy to prepare but, there is no comparison to the store versions in cans. The most difficult task with making soup is the chopping of the ingredients.

How To Make The Best Homemade Tomato Soup

Amy

Canned tomatoes are simmered with onions, garlic and a few other ingredients and then blended into the most delicious tomato soup youve ever tasted!

Step 1: Melt the olive oil and butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Add the onions and saute for 10 minutes, until they are softened.

Step 2: Add the garlic, basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes and cinnamon, stir and cook for 1 additional minute.

Step 3: Carefully stir in the tomatoes, rice and chicken stock. Cover the pot and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the tomatoes from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Step 4: Add the baking soda and then use an immersion blender to puree the ingredients until smooth. Serve immediately topped with homemade croutons and shredded cheese or with the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.

How Does Amys Light Sodium Lentil Vegetable Soup Taste

I heated this soup up in the microwave and had it for lunch.

I loved the flavor of the soup and on many levels it tasted similar to Amys Vegetable Barley Soup. There was a sweetness from the onions and carrots which balanced out by the earthiness of the lentils. It was nice to have all of the different colors and textures as it kept the meal interesting.

The flavor was just a little flat and I write that off as due to the low sodium content.

While the soup was good as it was straight from the can, it became completely delightful when I added a shot of Trader Joes Green Dragon Hot Sauce. The vinegar from the hot sauce brightened all of the other flavors and the lentils were awesome with the extra kick of heat!

Fire Roasted Southwestern Vegetable

This soup has a heat that sneaks up on you the kind that makes you keep eating, quickly, to keep it from catching up with your taste buds.I loved the flavor, though my timid taste buds couldnt continue to eat this soup straight up. To tame the heat, I made a meal for two out of the single can, pouring it atop two bowls filled with a base of brown rice and steamed sweet potato chunks. The soup itself contains black beans, potatoes, carrots, and corn all in a spicy, tomato base. On its own, if you can handle the kick, the entire can would make a good light meal for one.
