A 2017 study in the Journal of Renal Nutrition points out that the average cup of chicken bone broth contains more protein than the average cup of basic chicken broth.
Drinking bone broth or making a simple soup may be a beneficial way to add more protein to the diet and feel more satisfied with a meal without consuming too many calories.
Stores carry bone broth, but it is also very easy to make at home.
A simple way to make it is to save bones from other meals. For instance, a chicken carcass that is complete with beak and claws may make a good basis for a bone broth.
Many butchers and meat sections at grocery stores also sell any bones that they have available.
To make homemade bone broth, try the following recipe:
- 1 gallon of water
- 1 ounce of vinegar
- 3Ã¢4 pounds of bones and tissues
Boil the ingredients together in a large pot or slow cooker, then reduce to a simmer for 10Ã¢24 hours before letting it cool. Strain through a cheesecloth and pour into smaller containers for storage.
It might also help to add salt, vegetables, and spices such as sage or thyme to give the broth more flavor.
After making a big batch of broth, store it in smaller containers in the freezer. Heat these smaller containers as needed, and the broth will last longer.
How To Make Vegetable Soup
1. Prep Wash and chop all of your veggies. Sort your veggies by cook time, things that take longer go in first while things that are quicker can go later .
2. Flavor I add a touch of water and sautee onion and garlic first for flavor. Add spices or herbs to your liking.
3. Simmer Bring broth to a simmer adding in veggies and allow to cook until tender.
Slow Cooker Moroccan Soup
At less than 250 calories per serving, this fragrant sweet potatoes and lentil soup will definitely bring everyone to the table. You will need a slow cooker to prepare this recipe and very little effort to put it together.
Ingredients for Slow Cooker Moroccan Soup
Here are the ingredients you will need:
- 1 lb. sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into small pieces
- 1.5 cups green or brown lentils, rinsed and picked over
- 1 cup carrots, chopped
- 6 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
- 1 cup onions, chopped
- 6-7 cups low sodium broth
- 1 cup celery, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1.5 teaspoon each coriander and cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon curry powder
- ½ teaspoon each smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, and turmeric
- teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2.5 cups baby spinach, roughly chopped
- ¼ cup of lemon juice.
How to prepare Slow Cooker Moroccan Soup?
Place all the ingredients minus the baby spinach into the slow cooker and let them boil together for around 7 hours on the low setting or 5 hours on the high setting. Try the lentils to see if they are properly done. Freshly bought lentils will cook faster than those kept in the pantry.
After the initial phase, remove half of the contents of the slow cooker and put it in a blender with the rest of the broth . Blend the mix until it reaches the consistency of a smoothie and put it back in the slow cooker.
Add the baby spinach and lemon juice and cover the slow cooker. Unplug the cooker and let the soup simmer for around 30 minutes.
