Easy to make, my Keto Low Carb Hot and Sour Soup is rich, tasty, and full of familiar Asian flavors we love but without all the added carbs!

Coming in at around 5g net carbs per cup, this keto hot and sour soup would make a perfect make ahead lunch!

What To Add To It

I enjoy a bowl of this soup for lunch. It satiates my hunger and warms my belly. Serve it with a bowl of cauliflower riceor some keto egg roll meatballs.

Since this is mostly broth, you have the freedom to add more things to it too. Add some low-carb noodles to the broth or some finely diced cauliflower florets.

This is the perfect weeknight dinner. Just like all other soups, it also works for meal prep too. I enjoy saving some behind and heating it up a few days later. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about 7 days.

Low Carb Hot And Sour Soup Recipe

This low carb hot and sour soup recipe is packed full of all of those Asian flavors we love without all of the carbs that we donât love. Chicken stock is flavored with soy, chile sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and lime and then filled with ground beef and cabbage ânoodlesâ.

Just before serving egg white is drizzled into the simmering liquid for texture and protein. Just make sure itâs a slow simmer or your egg whites will break up like mine did! It ended up being not as pretty as Iâd like but the flavor was perfect.

I donât know how the weather is where you are but here in Dallas it has been colder and wetter than normal. Itâs nice to see everything greening up and the cattle tanks overflowing but those of us who donât do well in cold, damp weather are miserable. Most of my kiddos have been fighting the crud with coughing, sore throats, and swollen lymph nodes. Yesterday I built a fire in the dining room fireplace and huddled by it, wrapped in a blanket, to do my work. It was in the 40s which isnât cold for some of you but for me it is miserable. It makes my body hurt. I fixed the kids potato soup but I skipped dinner entirely because I wanted soup and I couldnât figure out anything low carb and fast.

So, I sliced cabbage up for the noodles and it gave me exactly the texture I wanted. The entire batch only has 244 calories and about 5.4 net carbs. Itâs a huge amount but so very satisfying!

Is It Okay To Eat Chinese On The Keto Diet

A lot of people think that the keto diet is all meat, butter, and nuts. While these foods are low-carb keto staples, there are plenty of other foods you can eat that will help you lose weight and stay in ketosis.

Very boring, restrictive diets can work, but they are far from gratifying. Most of us enjoy and crave a wide range of tastes and textures. Boring meals are no-ones idea of fun. In fact, dull, repetitive diets have the lowest success rate for weight loss. They might produce great results initially but eating nothing but steamed cabbage and baked fish soon gets old.

The good news is that the meat, butter, and nuts image of keto dieting is far from the truth. While carbs ARE off the menu, there are lots of things you can eat instead. Just because rice, potatoes, pasta, etc., are banned, doesnt mean you cant eat delicious but diet-friendly food.

On first look, Chinese food might seem completely incompatible with the keto diet. After all, eating Chinese food invariably means sitting down to a big bowl of rice or noodles, right?

This misconception means that a lot of keto dieters avoid eating at Chinese restaurants. Thats a shame because, by making a few smart choices, there are still plenty of low carb Chinese food options to choose from.

Chinese Hot And Sour Soup

Traditionally, Chinese hot and sour soup has ingredients that make it taste both spicy and sour at the same time.

There are lots of different ways to make this soup, but the most common way is to use red and white pepper for the spice and vinegar for the sour elements.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite things to order from a Chinese restaurant. I knew I had to find a way to make this at home so that it fits in my keto diet. And Im thrilled to tell you that I did it! This is a near-perfect copycat recipe.

Every Good Soup Starts With A Solid Flavor Base

Let me show you how to make my Chinese Paleo Hot and Sour Soup thats healthy, low carb and Paleo, Whole30, Gluten-free, and with AIP and Keto suggestions.

Every good soup made from scratch starts with a solid flavor base. And in my book that means using Asian aromatics plus a protein. Sauté the aromatics with seasoned protein first to help create a lovely flavor foundation base.

With this in mind, what you do next is absolutely crucial.

How To Make Keto Hot And Sour Soup With Pork

First, heat the oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Break up the ground pork and add it and the mushrooms . Take a wooden spoon to separate the pork and stir until the meat is cooked and mushrooms golden brown. This usually takes about five minutes.

Second, add the garlic, ginger, and chili paste and stir well while the flavors cook in for another minute or two. After that, pour in the coconut aminos, rice vinegar, salt, pepper, and chicken bone broth. At this point bring it all to a simmer and stir occasionally.

Avoid Breaded And Water

Breaded and fried meats are common at Chinese buffets, especially in dishes like General Tsos chicken, butterfly shrimp, and sweet and sour chicken. Thick breading and sugary sauces make these dishes too high in carbs to be keto-friendly.

When dining out, you should also try to avoid water-velveted meats if you know they were marinated in cornstarch rather than baking soda.

So What Can I Eat At A Chinese Restaurant On Keto

Chicken Tom Yum Soup| Thai Hot and Sour Soup| Keto & low-carb

So now that weve gone over what you cant eat at a Chinese restaurant on keto, lets go over the good stuff: what you CAN eat! Well go through a general list below and then Ill jump into more detail about specific dishes. What Chinese food is low carb? Lets find out!

In general, you can eat:

  • Clear soups
  • Egg drop soup is sometimes a good choice depending on whether or not theres corn starch in the soup. A lot of restaurants do use corn starch as a thickener in egg drop soup, so ask your server. If the consistency of the soup is on the thick side, assume theres some carbs in it. To give you an idea, a cup of P.F. Changs egg drop soup contains 6 grams of carbs whether this is too many or not will depend on your individual macros and carb allowance . If the soups consistency is thin and theres no starch then egg drop soup is a great keto friendly Chinese option
  • Hot and sour soup is also generally a good keto friendly choice, but similar to egg drop soup, it can contain corn starch and also a little sugar. Again, to give you an idea, a cup of hot and sour soup at P.F. Changs has 9 grams of carbs in it which is slightly higher than the egg drop soup. Be sure to check the ingredients with your server to see if this is a good option. If you do decide to order either egg drop or hot and sour soup, make sure you keep the portion to one cup to limit any potential carbs.
  • Anything steamed with no sauce or sauce on the side
  • Anything stir fried without sugar or corn starch

    Healthy Hot And Sour Soup

When you use completely fresh ingredients, you are feeding your body the fuel it needs to thrive and grow. The base of the soup is chicken broth. You can use chicken stock instead it adds more nutrients and flavor to it.

Its a very brothy soup, without a lot of solid ingredients. In fact, the only chewable foods in the soup is some tofu, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and green onions. You can add some egg to it too, but that is completely optional.

What sets this soup apart is the spice! I used garlic chili sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger paste, and rice wine vinegar. This combination is a surprisingly delicious one!

Keto Chinese Hot And Sour Soup Ingredients:

You can find the exact amounts needed on the recipe card at the end of this post!

This section is where I give specific recommendations or more in-depth instructions regarding the ingredients needed for this recipe.

  • in my opinion, it doesnt matter what part of the chicken youre using. I used chicken drums and thought it was an excellent choice.

Boiling chicken breasts can be a bit tricky because they can dry out and become rubbery. I prefer fattier parts of the chicken with the skin.

  • one onion: cut in half well be adding the onion together with part of the ginger to the boiling water for more flavor!
  • one red bell pepper: sliced into thin strips
  • one carrot: peeled and sliced into thin strips
  • good-sorted supermarkets should have them in jars or cans, otherwise you can get them from asian grocery stores. Also sliced into thin strips.
  • shiitake mushrooms: fresh or dried. I used dried shiitake mushrooms for this recipe because fresh ones werent available near me and I had to rehydrate them in water for approx. 45-60 minutes.

Read the instructions on the packaging if you use dried shiitake mushrooms and adjust accordingly. Some brands require shorter rehydration times of only 30 minutes while others require even longer times + additional boiling of the mushrooms.

  • eggs: two whole eggs
