Notes About Beef Bouillon

Lipton Onion Soup Dip Mix – SUPER YUMMY Party Recipe!

Beef is the base for French Onion Soup, and really a necessary ingredient in this dip IMHO. Over the years, Ive tinkered with how to incorporate that beef flavor in the best way and Im done trying. Its beef bouillon paste. Some onion dips add soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to get that flavor, but its not the same. Beef broth is ok, but its not rich enough plus, youd have to add a lot of it and then you risk the dip being too watery.

I always have Better Than Bouillon beef paste in my fridge because I use it in my Slow Cooker Pot Roast, incredible Beef Stew, Chuck wagon stew, and this dip. A little jar goes a long way! A beef bouillon cube can be used instead, BUT it gives off a much stronger, saltier taste and not my preference. NOTE: 1 beef bouillon cube crushed into a powder equals 1 1/4 teaspoons. If you go this route, I would add in 3/4 teaspoon, taste and only add in the rest if needed. And mix it really well, so the dip isnt grainy. Make one batch with the paste and once with the cube and compare!

French Onion Dip From Scratch

You dont need to rely on a packet of soup mix to create this delicious French Onion Dip from Scratch. It takes just minutes to put together with ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

There was a time, long, long ago, when you pretty much couldnt plan a party menu without including classic French Onion Dip among the appetizers. You know, the one with the Lipton Onion Soup Mix and sour cream. I have such strong memories of this dip being everywhere in 1970s suburbia.

Ive been craving those nostalgic classics lately so I headed to my pantry to see if I could come up with a homemade French Onion Dip that doesnt rely on the packet of soup mix. Friends, you wont believe how easy and how delicious this made from scratch version is!

If you have 5 minutes, you have enough time to make this dip.

Warm French Onion Dip

Take the flavors of French onion chip dip and French onion soup and put them together in a hot dip straight out of the oven. The result is this Warm French Onion Dip which is delicious with Parmesan crostini or any number of sturdy crudités.

The classic chip dip of all time is the French Onion Soup mix dip. It originated in the 1950s and was whipped up in no time by combining a packet of Lipton® French Onion Soup mix and sour cream. If you were really fancy, you might top it with some caramelized onions and serve it with ruffled potato chips. I loved this chip dip as a kid, but have to confess that I havent had it in years.

This recipe for warm French onion dip takes that idea of French onion chip dip and mashes it with a recipe for French onion soup, making a warm oniony dip with lots of Gruyère cheese that is thick and decadent enough to be scooped up on crostini. Sounds perfect for cool weather sport watching, no?

French Onion Dip Ingredients

The ingredients for the dip are relatively straight-forward. Obviously, well start with onions. This recipe calls for Vidalia onions, but any sweet onion will do. Sweet onions become even sweeter as they cook and its their sweet flavor were going for. If youre dying to make this dip and dont have any sweet onions, just go with yellow onions and make sure you caramelize them well.

What Is French Onion Dip

French Onion Dip isnt French at all, but rather an American concoction which is typically made with sour cream, dried onion, and herbs. A super quick way to make it is by mixing together some sour cream and a packet of onion soup mix > This is what kids of the 70s grew up on Ive also made it with caramelized onions, which is truly amazing especially for anyone who loves French Onion Soup or Onion Jam but to me, that is a completely different dip and not at all like the dip of my childhood.

So, what if you dont want all the preservatives that come in the pre-packaged stuff, or lack time and motivation thats required to caramelize onions for 45 minutes? Ive got you. This homemade French Onion Dip recipe is the perfect compromise, which tastes like the store bought mix, but made from scratch. Ready in only 5 minutes with only 6 ingredients.

Making Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

So there is nothing to making your Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip. Just mix it up, taste it and make sure you put just the right amount of the mix in the sour cream for your tastes and let it sit for a while. Preferably about an hour or so in the fridge if you can stand to wait. That softens up those onion flakes a bit and melds all those flavors together.

Do you live in one of those areas of the country where the only sour cream you can buy is the thinner sort? That used to be the case here in Minnesota, so I dont know if thats a thing where you live. If it is or if you dont want to shell out the big bucks for a premium brand of sour cream, line a strainer with a paper towel or cheesecloth and strain it in the fridge for an hour or more until the consistency of your sour cream is nice and thick.

California Onion Dip History

Lipton soup mix dip with garlic

As the story goes, in 1954, two years after Lipton introduced its dry onion soup mix, a now-unknown housewife in Southern California stirred a dry soup packet into a pint of sour cream and made a savory potato chip dip.

Her recipe was reprinted in newspapers countless times, and by the end of the 1950s, it had become a house-party classic, perfectly suited for mid-20th-century Americas new style of informal entertaining on the patio or in the family room.

French onion dip is often served at parties and as a “classic holiday party offering”. It has also been described as “an American classic”. Try this dip as a spread on hamburgers, sandwiches, tacos, or top a baked potato.

Game Day Mayo Jar Challenge

Hellmanns Mayonnaise is made with cage-free eggs, is rich in Omega 3-ALA, and made with real, simple ingredients: eggs, oil and vinegar. That seems like great recipe inspiration to me and as I found out, a 30 ounce jar goes further than you might think.

30 ounces equals 3 and ¾ cups of mayonnaise. The Creamy Onion Dip used ½ a cup.

Then I made Popcorn Shrimp, by coating the shrimp in mayo to adhere the bread crumbs. This was a new recipe for me and Im happy to report success. Ive included directions to make the shrimp in either a standard oven or air fryer. The shrimp only took ¼ cup of my jar to make.

I decided the shrimp would go great with some Yum Yum Sauce. So, I made a nice big batch of the sauce/dip. It is also known as a shrimp dip, but its nice alternative dip for vegetables as well. The sauce took 1 and ½ cups of my mayo jar.

Peeking into the jar, there was still quite a bit of mayonnaise in there. I knew I had to make another dish pronto, before my daughter started making her famous mayonnaise sandwiches with it. Jalapeno Popper Dip was my deliciously addictive grande finale! I used a cup of mayo in that recipe. Now there was just a little left at the bottom of the jar and I decided to let my daughter slather it on her multigrain bread, as she loves to do.

Mission accomplished and a scrumptious food fest to show for it!

Onion Soup Mix Dip From Scratch

This Onion Soup Mix Dip from Scratch is the bomb. Just like I remember that dip from way back when I was a kid. That stuff was super yummy. But, it used to have beef in it, so this vegetarian gave up eating it.

I dont know if it still has beef in it or not, but it definitely has some preservatives, and as I learned recently it isnt available everywhere, so its great to be able to mix up your own Homemade Onion Soup Mix.

Ive used the soup in mix in casseroles before, but never actually in a dip like this. Grab the recipe for the Homemade Onion Soup Mix here. And, here are my casseroles, Italian Apricot Stew or Italian Apricot Chicken. I hadnt made the dip, that is, until my Super Bowl party.

I figured that it had been years since I had a classic onion dip with those greasy ruffle potato chips, so why not. And, you know what? This was delicious! Perfect for my party spread. Super easy too!

Want to read my full Super Bowl menu? Take a gander over here where I share all the goodies that I made.

P.s. if you liked who won the Super Bowl you may want to get a cap to commemorate the event. .

I made a double batch of the onion soup mix to keep additional in the cupboard for another use.

If you make the onion soup mix up before hand, youll want to use 1/2 batch, or 5 tablespoons worth of the mix to 1 container of sour cream.

Super Easy French Onion Soup Dip

Classic Lipton

Throwback from the 80s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix a testament to how good it is!

I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesnt taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, its really soft French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.

This is a quick, short post because its an extra recipe for today, a reader request! So Im signing off. Hope you enjoy! Nagi xx

Saving Money & Other Options For Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

First of all, Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip beat the pants off any store-bought dip Ive hadand was much cheaper! The mark up on a store-bought dip is incredible. Watch for sour cream on sale, usually around every holiday. Sour cream keeps for weeks and stays fresher if it is stored upside down. It might be a bit messy when its opened, but try it and see if you dont notice a huge difference in the freshness.

As far as the actual Liptons Onion Soup Mix for this dip, check for your spices and herbs in the bulk section of the store and they may very well cost less. The best part of that homemade mix is that you can control the ingredients, especially the bullion. Go for something inexpensive or if its your jam, go for high end organic, or something in between. And if you dont want to make your own Liptons Soup Mix, youre always welcome to just buy a packet.

Now, Im not going to ever imply that Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip is an absolute match to my recipes with the slowly cooked caramelized onions, but it has a definite place in my repertoire of Onion Dips and I know Ill probably be making my Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip a lot more often than those that take so much work and time.

Why This Garlic Dip Is Even Better Than Onion Dip

Still, its a long way off from what Critz called the number one brand in that space and Americas favorite by far. In fact, Liptons Classic Onion Dip doesnt need to do much, if any, marketing.

I think the main arguments about why this rose to popularity would be political and social, explains Adrienne Bitar, postdoctoral associate in history at Cornell University and author of Diet and the Disease of Civilization. Following WWII, in an effort to expand civilian consumption of dehydrated foods , the government discovered a real winner. Consumers were much more eager to embrace dehydrated soups than they were other dehydrated products.

Coincidingly, as Bitar points out, the rise of the middle class and the idea that you would have an elite dip that you would show off to your friends at nice dinner parties in Levittown just kind of fits in with the larger story.
