Ham and Split Pea Soup Recipe – A Great Soup

I love this pea soup for two reasons:

  • Its soup
  • It has my favorite meat in it

The other pea soup recipe that is forever memorable and unbelievably delicious was my mothers. I dont have her exact recipe but Ive gotten as close as I can to her original. One of the main differences is that my mom used to make homemade noodles and then add them to her pea soup.

I have never attempted to make Moms delicious triangles of homemade noodles to add to my recipe because I feel like Id be disappointed. Ive also never met anyone whos had noodles in their pea soup.

But let me tell you, it was scrumptious.

Tips And Variations For Pea Soup

  • Add Vegetables: This is a hearty soup already, but you can even more depth to it by adding in a few red or yellow potatoes with the diced carrots.
  • Thicken: When cooking the peas should break down and thicken on their own, if you feel you want it thicker, simmer uncovered for the last 20-30 minutes. Do note that the soup will thicken as it rests and cools. You might actually need to thin it out with water the next day.
  • No Ham Bone: If you dont have a ham bone dont worry. You can still get that great flavor from thick chunks of sliced ham. Throw them in with the stock and allow it to simmer along with the rest. Add bacon at the end for garnish and even more flavor if you desire.

We take our pork very seriously here in Virginia, so Split Pea Soup with ham is the only way to prepare this old-fashioned favorite! Don’t even bother trying to make a vegetarian version, because the smoky ham adds so much rich, salty flavor to the dish. Whether you use a Dutch oven on the stovetop, the slow cooker for an easy hands-off option, or the Instant Pot for quick last-minute meals, this simple, hearty soup comes out perfectly every time.

The other great thing about this recipe is that you can use just about any version of ham that you have available. Simmering the soup with a ham bone is a great way to use up the leftovers from a holiday meal! I typically use smoked ham hocks for that classic smoky flavor, which I can easily find in my grocery store year-round. If you prefer, diced ham or even bacon will also do the trick!

How To Make Split Pea Soup With A Ham Bone

If youre planning on having ham this holiday season, do NOT throw out the bone! And dont let the person hosting throw it out either. I fully plan on being that person who asks to take the turkey carcass home after Thanksgiving at my in-laws so I can make homemade turkey stock. I dont care, I am who I am 🙂

Adding a ham bone to split pea soup elevates it to a whole new level. There is a ton of flavor in the bone itself, as well as marrow and gelatin, which infuses into the soup as it cooks . And theres also still likely a lot of meat left on the bone, which will easily come off after letting it simmer in the soup for so long.

Confession: I actually bought a whole ham JUST so I would have the bone to make this soup. Such is the life of a food blogger.

Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add 2 cups of cubed good-quality French or Italian bread.

Cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown and toasted, 3 to 5 minutes, then let cool.

How Do You Make Split Pea Soup

Youll start with a mirepoix, which is a fancy french word for carrots, celery, and onionsall diced.

Saute these in a big dutch oven, like this one, with butter and olive oil.

When these are soft, youll add your split peas, and stir around.

Then, youll add your ham bone, chicken stock, and some aromatics like garlic and bay leaves.

Allow this to simmer for about an hourduring which the peas will burst and create the creamy texture you see.

Remove your ham bone, and in chopped ham, and serve with the best homemade biscuits, ever!

A few things to keep in mind with your soup

  • It thickens as it cools. You can always thin it out with extra stock when you go to reheat it the next day.
  • You dont have to use a ham bone! Ive made this soup before with having a big hunk of ham sliced from the deli. Allow the soup to simmer and then chop up your ham and add it in.
  • There is no need to soak your beansjust pick through them and rinse them well.
  • If your peas dont seem to be cooking just keep cooking. Or, they might be old peas.
  • You wont believe the smell that wafts through your home when youre making this soup.

    This is definitely one of those recipes that if your neighbors are close by, they might just come a-knocking!

It came to us here in the States via Britain where it was known as pease porridge. Its a wonderful meal that deserves to be rediscovered.

    What Are Split Peas

    Split peas are field peas that are dried, peeled, and split in half for cooking. They come in both yellow and green varieties. Yellow split peas tend to be the mildest in flavor, and green split peas, sweeter. Youll often see the yellow peas used in curries.

    Split peas have great nutritional benefits. Theyre low in fat, packed with fiber and protein, and are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, B, and magnesium.

    Like the lentils in my French Lentil Soup, split peas dont need to be soaked prior to cooking. They should be rinsed and sorted to remove any stones that might have gotten mixed into the bag.

    Simmered with plenty of stock in a soup, theyll cook down and thicken into a textured puree .

    How To Make This Split Pea Soup In A Crock Pot

  • Add all the ingredients except the extra ham and carrots to the crock pot.
  • Stir to combine well, then cover and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 7-8 hours or until the peas are completely tender. Add the carrots to the pot about 1 hour before its done.
  • Remove the ham hock or bone and bay leaves, and shred any meat from the bone.
  • If desired, briefly blend the soup with an immersion blender to thicken slightly, still leaving plenty of texture. You may not need to blend the soup at all, depending on its texture.
  • Add any ham to the pot. Add salt and pepper to taste.

    Add a meaty ham bone to a 4.5 quart Dutch oven or soup pot along with the rinsed split peas, onions, butter, olive oil, onion powder, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, and water.

    Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover partially and simmer for 2.5 hours or until desired thickness is obtained. Add the potatoes and carrots about 40 minutes prior to serving.

    Remove from heat once the potatoes and carrots are fork tender. Discard the bay leaves and thyme stems. Remove the ham bone and cut/shred 2 cups of ham from it and add it back to the soup. Serve!

    What To Do If You Dont Have A Ham Bone

    You dont have to be like me and buy a whole ham just for the bone! If you dont have a ham bone since its not very often in life that we come across them, is it? you can definitely just use thick-cut diced ham, or a ham hock.

    You can use a smoked turkey leg if you want a pork-free version.

    And you can even make this soup vegetarian or vegan by omitting the ham and making a few other changes .
