This low-sodium soup uses potassium chloride to make up for the lack of salt. The additive is considered safe by the Food & Drug Administration however, people with kidney or heart problems should avoid it. Its also found in fertilizer and was used in fire extinguishers as an effective fire retardant up until the 1960s. However, if you only look at the nutritionals, this isnt a horrible soup. Well let you decide if its something thats worthy of a place in your bowl.

How Long Is Canned Soup Good For

According to the USDA, canned goods can last for years however, the can has to be in good condition if thereâs rust, dents, or swelling, toss it. âDates on cans indicate peak quality as determined by the manufacturer. So donât automatically pitch a can with an expired date,â advises the USDA. They suggest that low-acid canned products can be stored for two to five years. On the other hand, high-acid canned products , can last for 12-18 months. If you can foods at home yourself, these have a shorter shelf life and the USDA recommends consuming these foods within one year.

Moral of the story: It depends what kind of soup it is, and if the can is in good shape, but if itâs past the expiration date and the can is in good condition, you may not need to throw it out after all.

Campbells Homestyle Chicken Noodle

Wolfgang Puck Organic Soup

Campbells Homestyle Chicken Noodle soup does everything right that the original chicken noodle soup does, with its comforting simplicity, broth-y base, and wealth of noodles, but kicks things up a notch with a better noodle option. Whereas the OG chicken noodle soups noodles can be slightly limp and lets face it slimy, the Homestyle Chicken Noodle soup is packed with shorter, slimmer noodles that retain their texture without falling apart in the broth.

The homestyle variant also includes carrots, whereas the OG chicken noodle soup does not . Nutrition-wise, the two soups are nearly identical, too, so why wouldnt you go with the soup with the better noodles? It is worth noting, though, that the homestyle version is similarly condensed, so you will need to do a little extra work before lunchtime. But, if youre already putting in the effort, the homestyle chicken noodle soup is clearly superior to the original chicken noodle soup.

Selected User Reviews For Wolfgang Puck Organic Free Range Chicken Noodle Soup 145 Oz Can

straight- To distinguish it from a can of Campbell’s soup, mix up saltwater with literally zero. I’m not sure what I expected from a retired Las Vegas chef two decades ago, but I’m not expecting it any longer.

It costs $3 on a regular basis. That’s a lot of money for a can of soda. As a result of the Covid shutdown, I discovered it on Amazon and ordered it. I believe this is my fourth case of 12 cans. I’m not sure why 9 of the 12 cans are badly bent on both sides. Even a can opener will struggle to open some of them. And, with it shrink wrapped to cardboard the way it is, I don’t see how this could happen during shipment. A few of the twelve cans in one case were bent. All or a majority of the cans were bent in the other three cases. Is Wolfgang Puck getting rid of bent cans like this because they are bulk ordered and customers don’t see them? I don’t save much money on Amazon. I continue to make a $2 payment. 40 – $2. Each can costs $59. 00. Certainly not as good as the store’s previous sale prices. Sales are scarce during Covid, however. Please don’t sell cans that are so damaged that they should be thrown away or better yet, donated to food banks!.

A Vegetarian Gumbo Recipe Taught To Me By My Friend And Neighbor Kim A Rich And Delicious Gumbo Served Over Rice And Just Before Serving Eggs Are Poached In The Simmering Gravy

Good vegetarian gumbo exists. My neighbor Kim makes it for us, but only once a year. Kim is one of those 25th generation gumbo makers from the south, who told me about a vegetarian gumbo her mom used to make during Lent, or during times when meat wasnt readily available or affordable. The gumbo was served over rice, and just before serving eggs were poached in the simmering gravy. I eventually asked Kim if she would teach me to make this type of gumbo, and Friday night I made a big pot of it to share with our friends and neighbors who swing by on Halloween.

The recipe that follows is the gumbo I served on Halloween. Over the past few months Kim and I have tried a few variations to see what really makes veg gumbo great Ill note some of our findings in the head note of the recipe, in case you are wondering about substitutions.

If youre after a quick and easy gumbo recipe this isnt it. While seemingly simple you make the roux, then you make the gumbo it takes the better part of a morning or afternoon. More importantly, it takes patience, and focus, and attention to little details. I suspect gumbo-making is one of those things where you get better with each notch on your wooden gumbo spoon. More than any other food Ive cooked, its all about watching, and smelling, listening, and tasting.

Campbells Well Yes Chicken Noodle Soup

No, this isnt just a rebranded look of your go-to can of Campbells. This is the Well Yes! version of Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup, which is made with lean chicken meat, quinoa-based egg noodles, carrots, and beans. It landed just shy of a top-five spot on our list.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

We docked points on this one for color. It was an orange color. It was very odd, and the chicken chunks looked rather scary, but the taste was pleasant and I loved the beans and celery mixed in, one taste-taster noted.

The broth and noodles were not bad, but it was a bit bland, one person wrote. Another editor liked the packaging, and said it was a lot better than regular Campbells but still bland.

Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup

This was the only chicken noodle soup of its kind in our test. With this soup, you take the dry package out of the box and add water to the ingredients in a bowl. The soup came out of the microwave fine, but after sitting for a minute, it turned super thick. It would likely have been better if we made it on the stovetop, but the consistency wasnt the only problem our tasters had with this soup. The overpowering salty flavor was what landed this mix in our bottom three.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict

One of our editors remembered this mix from her childhood and was excited to try it againbut they quickly realized this didnt taste like the version their mom used to make.

The sodium in this was next-level. Way too much, they said. However, this was a childhood favorite, so I appreciate the nostalgia that comes with the flavor.

Another taste-taster complained about the overpowering saltiness of this Lipton soup. And another questioned the obvious yellow color of the broth, adding that the chicken pieces were tough and hard to chew. This was better than the last two soups but not good enough to get higher all-around ratings.

Campbells Condensed Chicken Noodleos

Yes, Campbells is often synonymous with canned chicken noodle soup, but that doesnt necessarily mean that every Campbells chicken noodle soup product is a winner. At the bottom of our pack? Campbells Condensed Chicken NoodleOs.

This product was made with children in mind and it shows. You get the fun shapes those NoodleOs are near-identical to what youll find in a can of SpaghettiOs some barely-there carrots and chicken and nothing much else. The flavor is bland, but if you were to eat the entire can, youd still somehow end up consuming 50% of your daily recommended sodium .

The additional fact that the soup is condensed doesnt make matters any better. No hungry consumer or parent with a hungry child, for that matter wants to spend all this extra time adding water to a canned soup and then simmering it on the stovetop, especially when other brands offer soups that you can simply throw in a bowl, toss into the microwave for a few minutes, and then eat.

We love that the majority of this can is filled with veggies and fibrous beans, but the sodium content is far too high to get our full stamp of approval. Plus, some may find the carrageenan, an additive derived from seaweed, to be irritating. Its been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems in sensitive individuals.
