    Chinese hot and sour soup is easy to make and ready in 15 minutes! Made with spicy chili garlic sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, and loaded with tofu and mushrooms! Vegetarian option included!

    This Chinese hot and sour soup is just like the restaurant version if not better! It’s spicy from the chili pepper flakes and chili garlic sauce, sour from the vinegar, and savory from the soy sauce.

    Shiitake mushrooms and tofu give this soup a meaty texture and the bamboo shoots give it a bit of texture. Use vegetable stock to make this a filling vegetarian hot and sour soup!

    Heat a large pot over medium high heat. Add the stock and bring it to a simmer. Once it simmers, add the mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and all the ingredients for the hot and sour soup seasoning. Bring it back to a simmer. Once the soup simmers, add the cornstarch and water mixture to the pot.

    6 oz. woodear mushrooms. 6 oz. chicken breast cut into strips. 1 C. slurry 2 eggs, beaten. 4 oz. white vinegar. 6 oz. silken tofu cut into strips. Bring stock to boil. Add soy sauce, white pepper, bamboo, mushrooms and chicken. Let cook for 3 minutes.

    What Makes Our Hot & Sour Soup Recipe Authentic

    My grandparents owned a takeout restaurant.

    It was called Sun Hing. They set up shop in a pretty rough New Jersey neighborhood, where my grandfather would churn out his famed fried chicken wings, shrimp with lobster sauce, and fried rice.

    Over the years at The Woks of Life, we have covered how to make many of these Chinese takeout classics. While I find that many takeout restaurants today are heavy on the grease while skimping on flavor, our goal is to really do each dish justice.

    My dad and mom brushed up on old skills and recipes from our familys restaurant days to record recipes on the blog like this hot and sour soup.

    Hot & Sour Soup: Recipe Instructions

    Making P.F. Changs Chicken Noodle Soup | OiB Kitchen easy recipe

    1. Prepare your pork:

    Combine the 4 oz. julienned pork shoulder with 1 tablespoon water until the meat has absorbed the water. Add a pinch of salt, 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon cornstarch and mix until combined. Set aside.

    2. Prepare your dry ingredients:

    Cut the dried chilies in half and discard the seeds. Mince them up and set aside.

    In separate bowls, soak the dried lily flowers, wood ears, and shiitake mushrooms in 1 cup of water each for 1-2 hours, until hydrated. Using hot water will significantly speed up the process.

    Once theyre ready, thinly slice the mushrooms and give the wood ears a rough chop. Trim the tough ends off the lily flowers and cut them in half.

    3. Prepare the tofu and the rest of the ingredients:

    Cut both the spiced tofu and the firm tofu into 2-inch long and ¼-inch thick pieces. Julienne the bamboo shoots. Beat the egg in a small bowl. Wash and chop the scallion and set aside.

    4. Assemble the soup:

    Bring the chicken stock to a boil in a wok or pot. If the pork has clumped and stuck together, it is best to add another tablespoon of water to loosen it up before adding it to the soup.

    Stir in the pork and quickly break up any clumps that may form. Once the soup is simmering again, skim off any foam that floats to the top with afine meshed strainer.

    Add the salt, sugar, dried chili pepper , white pepper, both soy sauces, and sesame oil.

    5. Taste and adjust to the way YOU like it:

    Hot And Sour Soup Seasoning:

    • Dark soy sauce – gives this soup a rich, dark color. Substitute with regular soy sauce if you don’t have it.
    • Rice wine vinegar – adds a bright, sour flavor to this soup
    • Chili garlic sauce – made with hot chili peppers and vinegar. Adds heat and acid to this soup.
    • Cornstarch – used to thicken up the soup

    How To Make Hot And Sour Soup

  • Cut the chicken into 1/8th inch thin strips. Add them to a large stockpot that full of boiling water. Cook for a few minutes until it is cooked. Drain the chicken and set aside.
  • In the same pot, heat chicken stock over medium heat. Add soy sauce, dark soy, white vinegar, white pepper, tofu, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, sesame oil, and the cooked chicken. Stir to combine, bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
  • While you are waiting for the soup to come to a simmer, stir the cornstarch with some chicken stock until it is fully combined with no lumps.
  • When the soup comes to a simmer, slowly stream in the cornstarch mixture while stirring. You want to make sure no cornstarch gets stuck on the bottom of the pot. Continue to cook until the soup has thickened, about 3 minutes.
  • Use a ladle to add the eggs. We are going to stir the soup then toss some of the beaten egg into the soup with the ladle, then again stir the egg in through the soup. Do this in about 6 batches. This will make the egg ribbon effect.
  • Taste, adjust seasoning if needed, and serve with a garnish of scallions.
  • This is such a quick and easy soup that you can make to really take your homemade take out to a whole new level! And if you are a fan of the P.F. Changs version, you are going to want to make this immediately!

    For some time now we have been toying with the idea of trying to create our own version of Hot n’Sour Soup here at the Love Shack. It’s one of our favorite things on the menu at P.F. Chang’s…along with their lettuce wraps…yummy!

    Then last week we were watching Dr. Oz and he had Chef Ming Tsai on the show to share his Shitake Hot and Sour Soup recipewhich is suppose to help boost your immunity. We felt like Chef Ming Tsai’s recipe was the best that we have seen, when it came to the fresh, organic ingredients and that he made it looks so quick and easy to make. So after picking up the ingredients at Trader Joe’s on Friday, we decided to try our own version today. That would be with chicken breast in lieu of tofu…just not a fan of soybeans…and sans the carrots since I’m allergic to them }


    • 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper

    Clean and dice your chicken breasts and onions. Heat the grapeseed oil in a large stock pot and add your onions and chicken to the pot. Stir and sauté over medium, high heat until the chicken is browned on all sides and the onions are soft, about 5 minutes.

    While the chicken and onions are sautéing, chop up your garlic, ginger and jalapeño peppers into very small pieces . Add the garlic, Ginger and jalapeño peppers to the pot and continue to sauté with the chicken and onion for another five minutes.
