Although most major grocery stores carry bone broth, the cost of this convenience comes with a hefty price around $5-6 a quart. Fortunately, making homemade broth at home is both easy and affordable.

In our kitchen, simplicity is key. There are hundreds of variations of broth/stock recipes. You can debate endlessly on the merits of just how many hours to cook it, the best seasonings, and what beneficial herbs and medicinal mushrooms to add to the blend. Or you can be like me and just simmer some bones in a pot. I dont add any herbs, vegetables, or salt. I keep it plain and simple and then spice it up when I add it to a recipe. My method is about as easy as it gets.

How Long Should You Boil Beef Bones For Broth
After the liquid has been raised to a simmer, turn the pots gently on. Fill the pot with simmering bones and add ice cubes. As many times as necessary, reduce the heat to low and simmer on low. With the lid slightly ajar, skim any foam or excess fat on the ground floor. You dont want to leave the stove running overnight. You should allow the simmered for at least 12 hours, ideally 24 hours.
How To Store Bone Broth
Lets discuss storage and freezing.
I like to store my broth in sealed jars or freezer-safe bags ziplock bags. These are my favorite glass storage jars to use when freezing. Theyre tall and skinny and great for deep freezers. When storing in the refrigerator, however, I usually keep leftovers in a pot with a lid as it is so much easier to reheat.
How long will leftover bone broth last?
Broth stored in the refrigerator will keep for 4-6 days while broth stored in the freezer will keep for at least 4-6 months.
Before storing or freezing always
Before storing its super important to cool your broth to room temperature. Ideally, you want to do this as quickly as possible to prevent any chance of contamination. The easiest way to do this is by adding a couple of handfuls of ice to the pot, covering, and waiting for the broth to cool. The ice will help expedite this process.
Or, as suggested by a reader, fill your sink or bathtub with a few inches of cold water. Place the pot in the cold water and allow the broth to cool to room temperature.

A Step By Step Guide To Making Bone Broth
The first things you want to get are some good beef soup bones and neck bones from a grass fed source if possible. I buy a quarter side of beef every 4-6 months so I always request these bones when the butcher is asking for my cuts.
You should also be able to get healthy bones from your local health food store. You might be surprised how much meat is still attached to these bones. This will add some great flavor to your broth. This recipe is adapted from the Weston A Price Foundations recipe.
The first thing you want to do is brown your bones on both sides. I just browned my Soup bones. Once browned Remove from pan and add to stock pot. Add some hot liquid to the pan that you just browned the bones and heat to a boil and scrape all the little bits of flavor off the pan and add that to the stock pot. If your bones are too big to brown on the stove top, you can add them to a roasting pan and roast them in a 350º F oven for 20-30 minutes or until browned.
Add the neck bones to the stock pot and 1/2 cup of vinegar. I used organic apple cider vinegar.
Add enough filtered water to cover the bones. I added about 5 quarts of water.
Allow to sit for 1 hour at room temperature. This is a very important step. This helps in pulling the natural gelatin out of the bones making your broth very nutritional.
Strain your vegetable beef mixture out of broth. I use a colander to get all the big stuff out and then I run it through a fine strainer to get all the finer pieces out.
Chicken Soup Stock Bones

Mason Jars Take Up Too Much Space In My Fridge
The goal of making bone broth is to make a big batch. Jars of bone broth can take up a lot of space in the fridge and/or freezer. I dont know about you, but my fridge is usually full, and making room for a few 32-ounce jars is a real stretch.
There are other ways of storing your bone broth without Mason jars, such as the Ziploc bag method and the silicone muffin tin method. Youll then need to free up some space in your freezer for the frozen bone broth.
How To Make Gut Healing Bone Broth With Organic Beef Bones
This recipe using organic beef bones is the recipe that Glenn used for weeks while healing his gut several years ago. He restored functionality within about 3 weeks and at that time began slowly reintroducing foods back into his diet. He has recommended the same broth recipe for several people with severe GI disturbances with fairly consistent results. Youll need a big stockpot. We use ours at least twice a week its worth investing in a large, copper bottom, stainless steel stock pot. You may be able to purchase one at a restaurant supply store for less than at retail stores.

What Are The Best Bones For Bone Broth
In this particular beef bone broth recipe, I have added a mixture of knucklebones, short ribs, oxtail, and femur bones. The result was a delicious, nutrient-filled, gelatin-rich broth.
The best bones for the best bone broth include:
- For added flavor incorporate meaty bones like oxtail, shank, and short ribs.
- Chicken feet contain loads of gelatin and are less expensive than other gelatin-rich bones.
- The bones of younger animals contain a lot of cartilage, as it is this cartilage that will eventually turn to the bone as the animal ages. For this reason, veal bones are particularly prized for making stock .
Tip If youre unsure at all, ask the local butcher at your favorite grocery store for the best broth bones and then request that he or she cut them in half for you. Trust me, you do not want to bring home an entire femur it wont fit in your pot.
Any Added Additives And Preservatives
When you make bone broth at home, you dont add any additives or preservatives. If you buy pre-made bone broth that contains additives and preservatives, it defeats the whole point. You might as well make bone broth at home.
So try to avoid bone broths that contain items like yeast extract or lactic acid.
On that note, Id recommend you stay away from powdered bone broth, as you are more likely to ingest heavy metals and/or chemical additives, even though they dont usually list those on the food label.

Roast The Bones And Vegetables
Now that your bones have been blanched, drained, and rinsed, its time to preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Transfer the bones and vegetables to the roasting pans. Avoid piling them all on top of each other- use two roasting pans, if necessary. Roast for 30 minutes before gently tossing the bones and vegetables, and roasting for an additional 15-30 minutes more.

Dont Forget About The Meat
Depending on the type of bones you use to make your bone broth, you may or may not have any meat left to be picked off. In my case, I had tons of leftover delicious meat perfect for soup, sandwiches, or the family pet. Dont let it go to waste! As for the vegetables, blend them together and add them to cooked rice, mashed potatoes, or, add a little broth and make it a delicious blended soup.

So how long does it last in the fridge? Provided you have a good, thick layer of fat that has solidified on top of the liquid, then you can keep it in the fridge for a couple of weeks. If you dont have a good fat layer on top, 3-4 days. Best is to keep a couple of jars in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.
