• 2 teaspoons fish sauce
• 1 1/2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce

Ive been doing a lot of experimenting with Asian cooking lately and one of the first recipes I tried was Chinese Hot and Sour Soup.

Hot and sour soup is always a family favorite when we go out for Chinese food, so I thought it was about time I tried making it at home.

I just love the variety of unique textures and flavors in this soup, from the Sichuan spices and chili oil, to the Chinese black vinegar. I did have to order my Chinese black vinegar on Amazon, since we dont have an Asian market close-by.

It was definitely worth getting a special delivery to give this soup an authentic Chinese flavor, and Ill be able to use the black vinegar in other Asian dishes in the future. If you do a lot of Asian cooking, I definitely recommend having some black vinegar on hand.

Hot and sour soup often features pork or tofu, but I decided to go with just veggies for my version, including matchstick carrots, Shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots and green onions.

A beaten egg is swirled into the soup at the end of cooking, for a bit of added protein. You could add beef or chicken too, and if you find wood ear mushrooms at your local grocery store, theyre a great substitute for Shiitakes.

We like our hot and sour soup extra hot, so we did add more chili oil than the recipe calls forso feel free to adjust the spices and seasonings to suit your tastes.

Hot And Sour Soup Ingredients:

To make this hot and sour soup recipe, you will need:

• Broth: Either chicken or veggie stock will do.
• Mushrooms: I highly recommend using shiitake mushrooms, but baby bella or even button mushrooms would also do.
• Cornstarch: To thicken the broth.
• Eggs: Which we will whisk, and the drizzle into the soup to make those lovely egg ribbons.
• Firm tofu: Which we will cube and add to the soup.
• Green onions: To stir into the soup and also sprinkle on top as a garnish.
• Toasted sesame oil: An essential flavor in the soup, which we will drizzle at the very end.
• Salt and pepper: Hot and sour soup is traditionally made with white pepper, which has a different and much stronger flavor than black pepper. I recommend adding in a pinch, and then you can always add in more later. Or if you dont have white pepper, black pepper will also do.
• Optional: Many restaurant versions of hot and sour soup are also made with bamboo shoots. Im personally not a fan of them, but you are welcome to add some in if you would like.

You choose a dish and it comes with a side salad, small bowl of hot and soursoup, egg roll, orange slice, and your choice of plain rice, fried rice, or chow mein. The fried rice and chowmein cost a bit extra . Personally I find the hot and soursoup to be too strong in flavor and sometimes it’s overwhelmingly sour. Their dishes are yummy, but nothing fantastic. But honestly, where else can you find filling food for about $6 a person! That’s insanely cheap and a great deal for fellow broke college students such as myself.

A big bowl of spicy-tangy-savoury-hearty deliciousness, and its just 216 calories. There are very few Chinese takeout favourites that are this healthy!

The only other ones I can think of is Chinese Lettuce Wraps and Egg Foo Young, but they arent as filling in their own right so when you add a good pile of Fried Rice, it isnt quite as low cal.

Add ins: Ive been known to add leafy Asian greens and even baby spinach to up the veg quota. Ive also been known to add rice, to fill it out. Its really, really good! Nagi x

Then, it was 71 degrees F yesterday afternoon! Yet all I wanted was this entire pot of soup. This warm, cozy, hot and sour soup without ever having to leave the house at all.

And you know what? This homemade version turned out to be so stinking amazing so easy and so much faster than delivery. No joke.

Made in 30 min from start to finish, this was absolute perfection. And I served it with all the crispy wonton strips.

While the list of ingredients seems lengthy, the making part is very straight forward. Also, this recipe has a nice flow toit so it should be done from start to finish, including prep time, in about 40 minutes:

• Start by soaking the shiitake mushrooms to rehydrate them

• Pour the chicken stock into the pot and as its coming to the simmer, measure out and add all the flavourings

• While the chicken is poaching, get all the other stuff for the soup prepared
