Can You Freeze Soup With Milk/cream In Them

Any soup that is heavily cream or milk-based will not freeze well.

This is due to the fat content in the dairy that will cause it to split when frozen and become grainy.

We recommend making the soup without the milk and freezing it like that. Then, when you are reheating it, you can add the milk or cream at the last minute.

We also suggest leaving any fresh herbs out of the soup until the last minute as it will go black and bitter if frozen.

How To Keep Potato Soup For Longer

If you want to be sure to enjoy your potato soup for a longer time, you should take into consideration using a vacuum sealer. This appliance sucks out the air from the bag or container, which means that no oxygen touches the food, thus preserving the flavor and making it last longer.

When it comes to soup, even one as thick as potato soup, you may want to take a few precautions before using the vacuum sealer. First of all, you should put the soup in the bag or container and place it in the freezer for a couple of hours so it goes solid. Then, you can come in with the vacuum sealer to take out the air and create the perfect seal.

We have a great list of vacuum sealers we tested out, but we are partial to the FoodSaver V4840 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealer Machine which works with freezer bags and containers of different sizes. Plus, if you get extra tools, it has even more uses.

Things To Consider When Freezing Potato Soup

There are no real hidden things to look out for when you are freezing potato soup. As long as you understand the simple science behind freezing food you should be aware that freezing a fully cooked potato will result in it becoming mushy when it is thawed out. This is due to the water molecules in the cooked potato expanding and causing the potato to fall apart.Another thing to consider is that blending your potato soup instead of opting for a chunky soup will potentially lead to a better defrosting experience. The only thing to be aware of then is that the cream could freeze in a strange way.In order to avoid this, you can choose to cook the soup about ¾ of the way through and then freeze it. Then you can thaw it out and continue to cook on the hob, leading to a soup that is not overheated and is more even in texture. This is also a better option for meal prepping and freezing, since a partly cooked vegetable will tend to thaw out better than a fully cooked one.

Can I Freeze Creamy Potato Soup

My answer to this is yes and no. I don’t freeze potato soup because of all the dairy in it. Dairy tends to curdle and separate once frozen and then thawed.

With that said, there are lots of people, who are better at freezing than I am, that freeze potato soup just fine. Be sure and add some additional water or chicken broth if needed when reheating the soup. You can throw the frozen soup into the slow cooker and let it cook and thaw that way or warm it up on the stove top.

Potato soup can freeze for up to 1 month in a freezer safe container or Ziploc bag.

Make Ahead Tips And Storage

Properly stored in an airtight container, the creamy potato soup will last in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. It’s a great make-ahead option that you can easily reheat on busy weeknights. In fact, I’d say it’s even better the next day!

To Reheat: Place the soup in a pot and warm over a low flame, just until heated through. Be careful not to let the soup boil.

How Long Does Potato Soup Last In The Fridge/freezer

The length of time you can leave your potato soup frozen is typically six months. Six whole months! Although, when kept in the fridge, it typically only stays good for about 4-6 days.

These estimates are just that, however, estimates. Knowing how long your potato soup will last depends on a variety of factors.

Under perfect conditions, the potato soup will stay good for that six-month term . If not, the results can vary dramatically.

According to the FDA, the designated safe temperatures to store your food items are 0 for frozen products and less than or about 40 for refrigeration. Anything above those specific temperatures, and the likelihood of ending up with spoiled food increases exponentially.

So stick to the guidelines, okay?

Of course, earlier, it was mentioned that the milk/cream might not hold up so well. Dont panic! Everything is going to be alright. The taste will be just as fresh as the day it was frozen .

Visually, the dish might seem a little different, but its nothing a real good whisking after reheating couldnt cure!

Notes And Adaptations For Instant Pot Potato Soup:

    • I use homemade cream of chicken soup, because it really is a cinch to make, its full of flavor, and its healthier than the canned stuff. You can even make a double batch of the homemade cream of chicken soup and freeze the extra, so youll have it on-hand the next time you need it. However, you can also use the canned stuff mixed with water if you prefer .
    • Theres no need to thaw the frozen potatoes first. Just add them as-is to the insert pot!
    • You could also scoop out the inside of leftover baked potatoes and use that in lieu of the frozen potatoes.
    • When adding the cream cheese, stir it around as it melts. You can use the back of a wooden spoon to mash any remaining lumps so they will melt easier. If you have itty bitty pieces floating around, thats okay, but you dont want any big chunks.
    • You can freeze leftovers, but the texture will be a little different after reheating. The potatoes break down a bit during the freezing and reheating process, and the soup wont be quite as smooth and creamy. However, it will still be delicious!
