Featured Partner: The Conrad Prebys Foundation

Since 1996, Father Joes Villages Village Health Center has partnered with the University of California, San Diego through the UCSD Combined Family Medicine & Psychiatry Residency Program to offer physicians an unparalleled clinical training opportunity and to deliver critical health services to patients in need. This program provides individuals who have complex physical and mental health needs with integrated primary care and psychiatric serviceswhereby improving medical care and access.

The Conrad Prebys Foundations generous grant of $80,000 contributes to the financial sustainability of this unique program, which expands the VHCs critical health care services and invests in the professional development of physicians in medically underserved communities. The grant will ensure that patients experiencing homelessness have access to quality care that will help them overcome health barriers on their journey out of homelessness.

Conrad donated generously to both healthcare and higher education during his lifetime, which makes Village Health Center a natural fit for the Foundations support, said Tony Cortes, Board Chair of The Conrad Prebys Foundation. VHCs multi-dimensional approach is making great strides in solving some of San Diegos most pressing challenges and the Foundation is proud to contribute to this important work.

How We Are Different

Brother Bennos is committed to operating with a very minimum amount of paid staff to accomplish our Mission and to enlist the greatest number of volunteers to help with the same goal.

Our Board of Directors is a working board and receives no compensation. Fund raising is carried out by our volunteers, grant essay writers and our generous donors, therefore your donations to Brother Bennos are not eroded by overhead, administrative, and fundraising costs.

Volunteers and program members play a key a role. Each month, over 200 individuals offer their time to carry out important jobs in accomplishing our mission. Over 90% of our funding comes from private donations, grants, and bequests. Our intention is never to rely on government funding to accomplish our mission.

Brother Bennos wide base of support within the community continues to grow year after year. We are grateful to the thousands of people who express their support of our work with donations of food, clothes, thrift shop items, time and labor, and of course financial contributions. Without them we would cease to exist. Donate to the Brother Benno Center Today.

Volunteer As Much Or As Little As You Can

A soup kitchen volunteer will normally work a four- to five-hour shift. The days and hours will depend on the organization running the service. You can volunteer the amount of time that is comfortable for you and your schedule. If you can only make a commitment for one or two days a year, your help is still valuable.

Featured Partner: Neurocrine Biosciences

Entering July of 2020, Father Joes Villages faced the challenge of adjusting and increasing services during the summer months when donations to Father Joes Villages are typically leaner. Thats when Neurocrine Biosciences stepped in to offer a $200,000 Matching Gift Challenge to fund critical services like health care, meals, shelter and more. Neurocrine Biosciences, a neuroscience-focused, biopharmaceutical company in San Diego, wanted to amplify their impact at a time when neighbors experiencing homelessness needed it most.

Together we can make a difference and help fulfill the mission of Father Joes Villages to elevate people out of homelessness and poverty, said Kevin C. Gorman, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer at Neurocrine Biosciences, upon the campaign launch.

Because of the generosity of Neurocrine Biosciences, Father Joes Villages was able to raise over $435,000 for our COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, which helped to continue and adjust safe, supportive services for neighbors most vulnerable in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Creating An Optimized Program With Volunteerhub

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has been using VolunteerHub to optimize its volunteer program since 2009. As an earlier adapter of VolunteerHub, the San Diego Food Bank has been able to capture and leverage volunteer data for many years, creating an organized volunteer program with the ability to drive growth and reach program goals.

The Food Bank uses many of VolunteerHub s volunteer management features including recruitment, registration , reporting, and communication capabilities.

Some of the most valuable feature sets of VolunteerHub that align with the Food Banks goals are the ability to communicate with groups of volunteers via corporate partnerships, the access to volunteer program trends via reporting, and the ability for volunteers to create profiles and self-register when and wherever they want via an internet connection.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank also has high hopes for how they will use VolunteerHub in the future to continuously optimize the organizations volunteer program. These ambitions and optimizations of the future include integrating volunteer and donor data, enhancing communication, and fundraising.

The backend features and support team are another component of VolunteerHub that the food bank leverages to keep the volunteer program growing and organized. VolunteerHub allows The San Diego Food Bank to access the data they need, whenever and wherever they need it.

Stay Safe While Volunteering

The health and safety of our food bank volunteers, staff and visitors are our top priority. While volunteering we encourage you to take the following safety measures:

  • If you feel sick, please stay home. While every volunteer makes a difference, we ask that you not put your health or the health of others at risk. When in doubt, stay home and let your volunteer contact know.
  • Confirm that volunteers are needed. Every food bank and meal program has different needs and varying safety guidelines during this time. Check with your contact to confirm your schedule and, if you are not sick, please show up.
  • Follow food bank and CDC safety guidelines. This includes regular handwashing, maintaining a safe distance, and wearing protective equipment like gloves and masks.

    Is Foodcycle A Soup Kitchen

A soup kitchen is a place where free food is served for people who are homeless or who cant afford to feed themselves. There are soup kitchens all over the UK and the world, and every day millions of people worldwide rely on them for food.

Soup kitchens are often run by charities, community centres or church communities, and they rely on donations of food from the public and from food retailers, as well as soup kitchen volunteers to cook and serve the food. Although we cook and serve free food, and rely on our amazing volunteers, FoodCycle is different from a soup kitchen.

FoodCycle is about community dining, we invite people to come inside to sit and enjoy a meal in a safe, welcoming space. Week in, week out we provide delicious meals and great conversation, using surplus food which would otherwise go to waste.

Whilst a soup kitchen often serves just that soup and some bread at FoodCycle we provided a three-course vegetarian meal, and our hosting volunteers make sure every guest, from every walk of life, feels welcome and has the opportunity not just to enjoy a meal and a conversation in good company.
