Whenever I have made this dip for a party, it has always been one of the first things to go. It tastes so much better than what you will find in the supermarket, and its surprisingly easy to whip up.

The traditional recipe for making this dip typically involves caramelizing onions with a range of different ingredients. Luckily by using some soup mix and some cream cheese, we can skip the time-consuming part.

Achieving The Best Tasting French Onion Dip

The dip may be slightly runny once you have blended the cream cheese with the French onion soup mix. To thicken it, I recommend placing it in the fridge for at least two hours. If it cools down too much, then the dip might go hard and will need to be warmed slightly to get to the right consistency.

Pick a French onion soup mix that you know and love as this is where all the flavor is going to come from. Picking a poor quality soup mixture might result in a dip that doesnt taste the best.

For a little bit of extra flavor, you can try mixing in some crispy bits of bacon after you have finished blending the dip. Its an amazing flavor combination that I highly recommend trying.

Party season is upon us so its super handy to have an arsenal of quick party food that you can whip up no matter how busy you are.

And while I always prefer cooking from scratch when I can. Some of my favorite easy dips are olive tapenade and hot onion dip made entirely from scratch, youre missing out there are many times when I simply dont have time to make it from scratch.

And this French Onion Dip made with French Onion Soup Mix has saved me many times. MANY times!

Even though its made using a French Onion Soup Mix, my twisted logic tells me that because I didnt buy it in a tub from the store, it is semi home-made.

And I can absolutely promise you, it is BETTER than store bought because its creamier. So many French Onion Dips sold at stores are rock hard when cold so the chips break when you try to scoop up dip. This French Onion Dip is soft even straight from the fridge no more broken chips!

There are versions of this made with just sour cream and French Onion Soup Mix. But I really feel that the addition of mayonnaise makes a huge difference adds richness and more layers of flavor.

Making Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

So there is nothing to making your Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip. Just mix it up, taste it and make sure you put just the right amount of the mix in the sour cream for your tastes and let it sit for a while. Preferably about an hour or so in the fridge if you can stand to wait. That softens up those onion flakes a bit and melds all those flavors together.

Do you live in one of those areas of the country where the only sour cream you can buy is the thinner sort? That used to be the case here in Minnesota, so I dont know if thats a thing where you live. If it is or if you dont want to shell out the big bucks for a premium brand of sour cream, line a strainer with a paper towel or cheesecloth and strain it in the fridge for an hour or more until the consistency of your sour cream is nice and thick.

Throwback from the 80s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix a testament to how good it is!

I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesnt taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, its really soft French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.

What French Onion Dip Is Made Of

Heres what you need for this recipe. Just a note on a few of the items:

  • The dip base is cream cheese , mayonnaise and sour cream

  • Less butter as much as I love Ina Garten, I often find myself cutting down the fat she uses in her recipes quite substantially. This is one such example. The original recipe called for 4 tablespoons of butter AND 1/4 cup of oil. I swear, this does NOT need that much way too rich! I made it with 3 tablespoons of butter, no oil, which is plenty and

  • Hint of spice adds a touch of extra flavour and warmth to the dip!

Notes About Beef Bouillon

Beef is the base for French Onion Soup, and really a necessary ingredient in this dip IMHO. Over the years, Ive tinkered with how to incorporate that beef flavor in the best way and Im done trying. Its beef bouillon paste. Some onion dips add soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to get that flavor, but its not the same. Beef broth is ok, but its not rich enough plus, youd have to add a lot of it and then you risk the dip being too watery.

I always have Better Than Bouillon beef paste in my fridge because I use it in my Slow Cooker Pot Roast, incredible Beef Stew, Chuck wagon stew, and this dip. A little jar goes a long way! A beef bouillon cube can be used instead, BUT it gives off a much stronger, saltier taste and not my preference. NOTE: 1 beef bouillon cube crushed into a powder equals 1 1/4 teaspoons. If you go this route, I would add in 3/4 teaspoon, taste and only add in the rest if needed. And mix it really well, so the dip isnt grainy. Make one batch with the paste and once with the cube and compare!

French Onion Soup Dip

I think I say this every time I post, but where has the time gone? How is it already February and Superbowl?!? This is the month when I reserve all of my kids summer camps and begin planning our family vacation . I can not believe that we are already here!

The one good thing about February is that it marks the end of our crazy period. With birthdays and major holidays coming every two weeks beginning in October through the end of January, we are not only exhausted, but broke. Now that it is all over, we can focus on re-growing our savings and enjoying the simple life!

I am not a huge fan of football but I do love to watch the commercials during the big game. I also love the food and beer part of the celebration! Who doesnt right!? I always make a huge spread of cheesy calorie full appetizers and fun football themed desserts.

This year I will be making this French Onion Soup Dip. I made it during the holidays and it was a huge hit! It is easy to throw together adds variation to the chip and guacamole filled table. Dont get me wrong, I love chips and guac, but I also like warm gooey cheese and sweet onions on toasted bread. This dip is like the is like the sophisticated dip version! There always has to be one, right!?

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease an 8 or 9 inch baking pan or cast iron skillet with non-stick cooking spray.

    When a recipe only has 4 ingredients, you know the directions are going to be just as short. This is an easy one, so Ill get right to the point for you.

    Cream Cheese: Youre going to need the full, 8 ounce block of cream cheese. Just make sure its softened before you go to mix the ingredients so it blends better. Especially if youre going to serve it cold.

    Spinach: I always use a box of frozen spinach. It comes in a 10 ounce block. About an hour or two before I make the recipe, I open the box of frozen spinach and place it in a colander in the sink to thaw. When its completely thawed, use your hands to squeeze out any extra water. Frozen spinach really holds a lot of excess moisture so make sure you squeeze it out so your dip isnt watery.

    Sour Cream: You can use full fat, reduced fat or fat free sour cream. Any of them will work for this recipe.

    French Onion Soup Mix: I usually use the store brand French Onion Soup mix. Just one packet, dry for this recipe.

    How To Store This Dip

    How long does French Onion Dip last? Its delicious the same day its made and even better the next. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep up to 5 days without any flavor loss, but will loosen a bit as the days go on, so give it a quick stir before serving again.Can you freeze French Onion Dip? No, sorry. Once thawed, the sour cream separates and becomes grainy and unappetizing.

    Assembling And Baking The Dip

    Once your onions are ready, the dip comes together in a flash. All you need to do is stir together a few ingredients, add the onions and get ready to bake! To make the dip, you will need:

    • Those delicious, freshly made caramelized onions.
    • 2 bricks of cream cheese, softened. Leave it on the counter for an hour or so before youre ready to make the dip. Mixing firm cream cheese is HARD and makes for mixed results, with not so mixed ingredients. Plan ahead and let those bricks chill on the counter and get nice and pliable.
    • A cup of sour cream, for tang and even more richness.
    • A bit of dry or fresh thyme, to give the dip that classic soup flavor.
    • A bit of Worcestershire sauce, for umami goodness.
    • Gated Parmesan cheese, for salty, cheesy bite.
    • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese, to top the dip and make it extra bubbly, crisp and gooey.

    To bake the dip, simply stir together all the ingredients above , and transfer to either 1 greased 8×8 glass or ceramic baking dish, or 2 large oven-safe soup crocks. I like to serve the dip in 2 crocks, because its super cute- and because it is French Onion Soup Dip, after all. If you are taking this to go- it could also be prepared in a foil pan.

    Once the dip is in your baking vessel of choice, top it with the cheddar cheese and transfer it to a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes, until the cheese is browned and bubbly. Then resist the urge to dig in for about 10-15 minutes.
