When you read a label looking for MSG you might be able to find it that easily, but it doesnt mean that its not in there. There is a whole list of ingredients out there that have MSG in them but have different names on the labels. Its kinda confusing so I added a link for you to check out that breaks down the different fancy names for MSG.
But yes, according to the label ingredients for the Lipton soup mix, it contains Disodium Guanylate and Disodium Inosinate which are 2 of the fancy names for MSG.

Dry onion soup mix is one staple that I missed when I first started my diet. I mean, really, who doesnt crave onion dip with Ruffles every once in a while?! Plus, in a pinch, it saves so much time to throw dry onion soup mix into the pot for seasoning instead of measuring out a bunch of different spices . Eventually, I realized that I needed to find a replacement, so I experimented with several recipes online and found a couple that I liked. In fact, there are two winners that I use regularly, but for different purposes.
Todays recipe does not make the best onion dip , but it is a great substitute in recipes that call for dry onion soup mix as a seasoning rather than the main event. Around here, this blend is perfect for my favorite meatball recipe in fact, I actually call this my meatball spice mix rather than dry onion soup mix. 1 pkg Beef Vegetable & Barley Soup Starter Mix. 3 stalks celery chopped. 3 carrots chopped. In a pot, heat the oil & add meat. Saute until the meat is browned on all sides. Add the water, tomatoes, and Soup Mix. Bring the mixture to a boil, and reduce the heat. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the celery and carrots.
Add dried onion flakes, onion powder, garlic powder, chives, and beef bouillon paste. Mix together very well until completely blended. Taste and adjust seasonings, if necessary. It can be enjoyed right away, but ideally refrigerate for 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld and the dried onion to soften a bit.

- To make soup: Place this mix into medium saucepan. Stir in 4 cups water and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Makes about 3 ½ cups.
- To make onion dip: Combine this mix with 1 container sour cream.
- Three tablespoons of this mix will equal one packet of store-bought onion soup mix.

As I have tried to trim my grocery budget, Ive started making a homemade substitute for onion soup mix as a way to save money and control the ingredients, and I have been so pleased with the results!
Being able to easily make my own onion soup mix has worked so well that I have since researched recipes to create my own taco seasoning and ranch dressing mixes as well.
