Campbell Soup Plant Still Under Development

Q: Can you please provide an update on the new Campbells Soup plant being built in the Cedar Creek Business Center? When is it expected to open and how can you apply for employment? J.S.

A: Robert Van Geons, president and CEO of the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Economic Development Corp., says construction of the facility is all but done, but he hasnt heard yet when the warehouse and distribution center will begin operating.

That echoes an email Thursday from Campbell Soup Co. spokeswoman Michelle Reardon, who said, The site is still under development and, as a result, were not currently hiring. Were happy to stay in touch and share more when we begin fully hiring.

The project, a joint undertaking by Campbell and DHL Supply Chain, was announced in December of 2017.

It was originally expected to open in the first half of this year.

Incentives for the project from Cumberland County and the state included a break on new real property taxes for seven years. The county also agreed to sell the company about 98 acres in the industrial park for about $1.23 million, more than $500,000 less than the fair market value.

The company will be required to purchase the land and create at least 112 jobs by the end of this year. The company also will have to create seven jobs a year from 2020 through 2023, bringing the total to 140 jobs.

Campbell has a job listing site careers.campbellsoupcompany.com but there are no Fayetteville job listings on it right now.

Campbell Soup Closing Two Plants

Scott Witten

Heartland Publications

MAXTON Campbells Soup announced this week that it planned to close its Sacramento, Calif., plant and shift part of that production to the facility in Maxton.

The company has not said if the change will mean more jobs for the soup makers Robeson County plant. Officials at the Maxton plant referred questions to the corporate office in New Jersey. Officials there issued a statement, but declined to say more about the shift.

According to the statement, the Sacramento plant employs about 700 full-time workers. The company plans to shift the majority of Sacramentos production of soups, sauces and beverages to plants in Maxton Napoleon, Ohio and Paris, Texas.

Campbell officials said closing the California plant should help trim costs amid declining consumption of canned soups. The Sacramento plant, built in 1947, held the distinction of being one of the oldest production facilities and one of the most expensive.

Campbell also plans to close a spice plant in South Plainfield, N.J., that has 27 employees. Production will be shifted to the companys other spice plant in Milwaukee, officials said.

The company said the moves will result in annual savings of about $30 million.

Employees at the two closing plants were notified on Thursday.

Campbell will close the Sacramento facility in phases, with plans to cease operations there by July 2013. The New Jersey plant will close by March 2013.
