This creamy and comforting chicken wild rice soup has been a favorite at my house. Easy to make with a box of wild rice, some fresh veggies, chicken broth, and chicken breasts. The chicken gets fall apart tender and so flavorful thanks to the seasoning packet included in the rice box.
Even kids will love this chicken and vegetable filled soup thanks to the creamy texture and mild taste. Our favorite way to eat this soup is inside bread bowls!

How To Make Creamy Chicken Wild Rice Soup In A Crockpot
- Melt the butter in a soup pot over medium-high heat on the stovetop.
- Lightly sauté the carrots, celery, garlic and onions just until the onions start to turn translucent. You don’t want them completely cooked through. What we’re doing here is partially cooking the vegetables in a way that not only brings out the flavor of them but cuts the cooking time in half.
- Stir in the ¼ cup of flour. It will form a paste aka a roux.
- Add the chicken broth a bit at a time mixing well until all the chicken broth has been added.
- Pour into a 6 quart slow cooker.
- Add the chicken, wild rice mix, and it’s flavoring packet.
- Cook on low for 4 hours.
- About 20 minutes before serving, add the half and half.
Can You Freeze Creamy Chicken And Rice Soup
As a general rule of thumb, creamy soups donot freeze well as the texture can become unpleasantly grainy as the dairy andfat separate. You can still freeze the soup with these expectations, or omitthe half and half when freezing, then add the half and half to the soup after thawing then you will have no problem. Alternatively,you can swap the half and half for evaporated milk .

This Instant Pot Chicken and Wild Rice Soup is super easy to make. And it can also be cooked on the stove top as well. Its gluten free and dairy free, but theres also a creamy option to check out as well. Its chock full of veggies and I love making it for meal prep lunches during the winter.
This soup is the definition of cozy and comforting! I started making it back in March, and it really just came together based off what I had in the pantry/freezer. It was such a hit, Ive been making it ever since.
So during the colder months this year, Ive been making this soup for anyone we know going through a hard time, or that has gotten sick. Its just the right amount of filling when youre not at your best. And it really just hits the spot in a way I cant describe. Theres something about the flavors just keeps you coming back for more.
Its also super easy to make which I think is at least half the reason its become such a go-to recipe for me. So if you know anyone who could use some extra care, try taking them a container of this soup with a batch of my Healthier No Bake Cookies.
That has been a winning combination for me so far this year!
Were also so fond of this soup, I often make it as part of my weekly meal prep. It reheats beautifully for healthy lunches all week long.
